Deploy clean energy on your production with confidence.

Power planning for film and events is complicated.

GridPro makes it easy.

  • Film and event power planning technicians are accustomed to using large diesel generators.
  • Batteries have a finite capacity. Solar energy potential changes every day. Hybrid equipment draws on multiple energy sources.
  • Clean energy alternatives require a more precise approach to power planning.
  • When these systems are combined, the interactions between them are too complex for the back of a napkin.

GridPro turns location maps into power planning tools.

  • GridPro uses things you’re already doing—creating schedules, getting supplier quotes, making maps—to deliver instant insights about carbon emissions and energy and fuel consumption.
  • Once GridPro is set up, it takes only a few minutes at each location to create a shareable map that not only communicates critical logistical information efficiently and effectively, but also produces a precise energy consumption profile for each day.
  • Without spending any extra time, technicians create highly efficient power plans with GridPro.

Frequently Asked Questions

We already have workflows in place. Why add another tool?

GridPro is designed to replace inefficient tools that film crews already use, like group chats, spreadsheets, phone calls, emails, handwritten notes, and mapping tools that were not designed with film production in mind. This means GridPro actually saves time, while reducing the risk of miscommunication by continuously providing the whole team with a single source of up-to-date, comprehensive information about everyone’s equipment needs on any given day. No spreadsheets or cumbersome back-and-forth email threads about equipment required.

What if my crew doesn’t want to change their way of doing things?

Technicians are under a lot of pressure to keep the lights on and the easiest way to do that is to stick with what they know. But the industry is moving toward clean energy whether individual crew members are ready or not. Networks, funders, platforms, and major studios are increasingly requiring the implementation of sustainable production practices. GridPro was built by an experienced power planning technician who understands the pressure film crews are under; it was designed to make generator-free production planning easier, not harder. GridPro doesn’t ask anybody to embrace a philosophy — it only offers them a practical, intuitive tool to help them navigate the transition to clean energy solutions with confidence, without changing their basic workflows.

Is clean energy tech ready for use on major productions?

Yes! Many big tent productions and major network series are already using clean energy solutions like solar trailers and battery energy storage systems (BESS) every single day, saving themselves thousands of dollars in fuel spending and dozens of tons of carbon emissions. GridPro's analytical model has been validated against real data from several clean energy suppliers and dozens of productions across North America. In other words, the model is based on real metrics from big budget productions who have already successfully implemented clean energy technologies – GridPro reflects practice, not theory.

What if there are no clean energy vendors in our area?

GridPro includes a vendor discovery feature that lists equipment suppliers by region. Many clean energy vendors — solar trailer operators, BESS rental companies, hybrid generator suppliers — are willing to transport equipment across state lines or into adjacent markets where local options are limited. The vendor database in GridPro is specifically curated for film and TV production use, which saves you sifting through industrial or commercial vendors that don’t have film industry experience.

Is GridPro difficult to learn?

No! GridPro was designed and built by a film technician and producer who understands the time pressures and workflows of production. The interface is visual and intuitive: you place equipment where it will physically live on a map of your location and the app does the rest. Most users are able to create an equipment setup and view its energy and fuel consumption details within a few minutes on their very first session.

What operating systems does GridPro run on?

GridPro works in any modern browser on a laptop, tablet, or phone. It can also be installed on a laptop or smartphone to launch as a standalone app:

  • Chrome: Look for the “Install” option under the three-dot menu under “Cast, save, and share”.
  • Safari (iOs): Tap “Share” at the bottom of the screen and select “Add to Home Screen”.
  • Safari (macOS): Install on your home screen using “File” → “Add to Dock”

How much time does it save?

Gaffers agree that planning for clean energy requires far more prep than a diesel generator. Because there are no other tools designed to support them with this work, they must each figure out their own method of calculating daily energy needs. This means contacting each department head to get a sense of power requirements on any given day. Calculations are communicated to other team members and to production by phone, email, or text. Then, if anything changes, the whole process must be repeated. Add all these workflows together and power planning can take hours, every day of production. GridPro can reduce this to only a few minutes a day for each contributor. Additional savings come from eliminating the long cable runs that are needed to isolate the noise of a generator from the film set, and to protect the crew and nearby communities from harmful emissions.

We already get carbon savings estimates from suppliers. How is GridPro different?

Due to a lack of on-set experience, clean energy vendors often use models of fuel and carbon savings that don’t reflect how film productions are usually energized. They may rely on emissions factors based on utility-scale power plants, resulting in an underestimate of savings, or they may incorrectly assume that each piece of equipment would otherwise be powered by its own generator, leading to a huge overestimate that doesn’t pass the sniff test. Because there’s no consistent methodology, clean energy vendor estimates are all over the map. The model behind GridPro is auditable, rooted in decades of real, on-the-ground experience powering film sets and events, and has been validated against fuel truck logs, generator operation logs, telematic solar trailer data and more from dozens of productions. We have no financial interest in promoting a particular solution, which allows our model to deliver an objective third party analysis of clean energy technologies as they emerge.

Do I need the Producer subscription tier in my job?

GridPro Indie is designed to help individual power planning technicians quickly assess the energy profile of a setup, find local vendors of clean energy equipment, and identify nearby grid tie-ins or public EV fast charging stations. This free tier is designed to support crew members tasked with understanding the viability of clean energy options on any given day. The Producer tier is designed to support the implementation of a coordinated clean energy strategy across all areas of production, and unlocks team collaboration, schedule management, automated imports of equipment quotes and shooting schedules, and project and enterprise level analytics.

How does team collaboration work in GridPro?

GridPro allows the whole team to work together to build the plan for each day of production. Once you create a project (Producer or Studio tier), you can invite any number of other team members to contribute information to the location maps associated with that project. Each team member can create their own layer on the map, where their equipment and energy needs can be viewed by other team members. Map layers are protected – each contributor’s equipment selections and placements cannot be altered by other contributors, mirroring the professional standards of a film set. This approach allows everyone – on set, on survey, or back in the office–to access a single source of truth, which is continually updated in realtime.

Can I use it for a single shoot day or does it require a full project setup?

Yes, you can plan a single day in GridPro! You can even plan a family barbeque or off-grid campout with GridPro, or use it on a road trip to find public charging for your EV. The equipment package is fully customizable at every tier, allowing you to create a digital twin of any microgrid you can imagine, anywhere in the world. Flexibility and user-friendliness is baked into GridPro at the deepest level of its design.

What if clean energy won't work for a particular day or location?

GridPro tells you that too, with no friction or guesswork. One of the explicit design goals of the tool is to make it easy for power planning technicians to say "a battery won't cover this day" or "we need to run a generator during this window" with the data to back it up. That clarity is valuable: it lets technicians have conversations with producers and vendors that are based on a shared understanding of the facts on the ground and empowers producers to focus green investment where it will make the most impact.
